Greenock Shiraz 2018

Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Open Top Fermented | Basket Pressed

The 2018 Greenock Shiraz was sourced from a single vineyard grown on the family estate, known as the East Block.  Only the finest fruit from the hillside of the East block was selected for the 2018 Greenock Shiraz.  The vines are planted at an altitude of 350m in red-brown earth over friable red clay.  As the soil depth increases the red clay mixes into the large calcareous clay layer.  The gentle slope and rocky soil allows for good drainage and all supported on an ironstone rich hill.

The grapes were handpicked, 100% de-stemmed and 100% crushed berries were then placed into small 3 tonne open top fermenters.  Fermentation and extended maceration on skins were conducted over 18 days with the cap being hand plunged three times per day with an occasional rack and return.  After primary fermentation the wine is drained to barrel and the skins are hand dug to the basket press.

Show Tasting Notes

Appearance:  Glossy deep magenta to black core with an intense crimson-red rim.

Aroma:  Oak spices; clove, nutmeg and allspice are equally matched with an array of red and black fruits; touch of raspberry to mostly blueberry, blackberry and cherry.

Palate:  Medium to full bodied, concentrated velvety mouthfeel with a firm grainy finish.  The 50% new oak has matured well into the wine now allowing the purity of ripe fruits to dominate.  The red and black fruit flavours are balanced nicely with the bright core of acidity.  It’s not the classic heavy Greenock but a bright fruit driven, structural wine will be the hallmark of this 18 vintage.

Maturation: 20 months in 40% new French oak, 40% seasoned French oak and 10% new American oak and 10% seasoned American oak hogsheads.

Cellar Potential:  15 years with careful cellaring.
