2020 Block 6 Moppa Hill Shiraz

Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Basket Pressed

The 2020 Block 6 Moppa Hill Shiraz is sourced from a 6-acre single vineyard on the eastern slope of the Moppa Hill.  It has an altitude of 355m to 370m and is planted on ancient iron rich sandy soil over friable orange clay.  Sustainable vineyard practices are used with a real care for the soil and surrounding natural environment.  Naturally a low yielding vineyard and produces wine with distinctive aromas and complexity.

The fruit was picked on the 2nd of March and yielded another small vintage at 930kg per acre.  100% de-stemmed and whole berry into small open top fermenters.  Traditional fermentation practices with hand plunging twice per day and receiving an occasional rack and return.  After 17 days on skins the wine was drained to barrel, the skins hand-dug to the basket press.  And matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Show Tasting Notes

Appearance:  Glossy black core with a crimson-purple rim.

Aroma:  Perfumed blackberry, plum, mulberry fruit and abundant spice, characteristic of the vineyard.  This site assures a true sense of place with its purity of fruit, peppercorn spice and dried lavender.  There is a subtle suggestion of geological input from the site adding complexity with a hint of ferrous.

Palate:  Leaner on the palate this vintage but still with Moppa bright intense flavours.  Ripe blackberry and rich plum fruit woven on a bed of baking spices at its core.  Balanced by savoury black olive, dark chocolate and liquorice.  Good acidity with velvety tannins allows for immense drinkability now.
