2022 Augustus Shiraz
Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Property Founded 1855 | Basket Pressed
The 2022 Greenock Shiraz was sourced from a single vineyard grown on the families Greenock property, known as the Augustus Vineyard. Only the finest fruit from this hillside vineyard was selected for the 2022 Greenock Shiraz. The vines are planted at an altitude of 350m in red-brown earth over friable red clay. As the soil depth increases the vine roots run deep into the large calcareous clay layer. The gentle slope and rocky soil allow for good drainage and all supported on an ironstone rich hill.
The grapes were handpicked on the 31st of March, 100% de-stemmed and 100% crushed berries were then placed into small 3 tonne open top fermenters. Fermentation and extended maceration on skins were conducted over 21 days with the cap being hand plunged twice per day with an occasional rack and return. After primary fermentation the wine is drained to barrel and the skins are hand-dug to the basket press. And matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Appearance: Dark core with vibrant crimson rim.
Aroma: A fruit driven vintage; black cherry, plum and blackberry on the nose. A touch of black olive, liquorice and the cooler vintage have spun some bay leaf and menthol flavours. Cedar notes and vanilla spice present from just over 20 percent new oak but not overpowering the fruit.
Palate: Medium to full bodied, round and generous mouthfeel with black fruits flowing onto the palate. An upfront delicious, approachable Greenock Shiraz that doesn’t need 10 years in the cellar. The medium acidity is perfectly balanced with natural fruit tannins and high-quality oak tannins, helping drive a long lingering finish.
