Greenock Shiraz 2014

The 2014 Greenock Shiraz was sourced from two vineyards grown on the Kalleske’s Greenock property, 52% from Home Block and 48% from the East Block.  Only the finest fruit from the southern slope of the Home Block and hillside of the East block was selected for the 2014 Greenock Shiraz.  Home Block is characterized by compact red clay leading into a calcareous clay mix at about 3 feet. East Block is very friable deep red clay with iron stone.

The grapes were handpicked and 100% de-stemmed.  100% crushed berries were then placed into small open top fermenters.  Fermentation and extended maceration on skins were conducted over 15 days with the cap being hand plunged three times per day with a rack and return.  After primary fermentation the wine is drained to barrel and the skins are hand dug to the basket press.  The wine is matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Show Tasting Notes

Appearance:  Dark to magenta core with brick to crimson red rim.

Aroma:  Very reflective of the growing season.  Hot dry start and finishing cool; bright florals of semi dried violet and a touch of lavender.  Red and black fruits namely, raspberry, red currant and blackberry.  There is also a slight earthiness with dried herbs and underlying cedar oak notes.

Palate:  It is medium to full bodied, soft round mid palate tannins, bright acidity with lovely black berry flavours. The finish shows you where the bedrock of tannins are, they are fine grain and slightly chalky which will ensure a bright future.

Alcohol:  14.5%

Maturation:  21 months in 40% seasoned French oak hogsheads, 30% new French oak hogsheads and 20% new American oak hogsheads and 10% seasoned American oak hogsheads.

Cellar Potential:  20 years with careful cellaring.
