2021 Block 6 Shiraz
Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Basket Pressed
The 2021 Block 6 Moppa Hill Shiraz is sourced from a 6-acre single vineyard on the eastern slope of the Moppa Hill. It has an altitude of 355m to 370m and is planted on ancient iron rich sandy soil over friable orange clay. Sustainable vineyard practices are used with a real care for the soil and surrounding natural environment. Naturally a low yielding vineyard and produces wine with distinctive aromas and complexity.
The fruit was picked on the 25th of March and yielded another small vintage at 1 tonne per acre. 100% de-stemmed and whole berry into small open top fermenters. Traditional fermentation practices with hand plunging twice per day and receiving an occasional rack and return. After 21 days on skins the wine was drained to barrel, the skins hand-dug to the basket press. And matured with minimal racking until being bottled un-fined and unfiltered.
Appearance: Intense black core with a crimson-purple rim.
Aroma: Captivating and extremely complex nose where the depth of aromas is abundant. Mulberry, plum and black cherry fruits and abundant spice, are characteristic of this vineyard. This site assures a true sense of place with its purity of fruits, mixed spices including star anise and peppercorns. There is a subtle suggestion of geological input from the site adding complexity with a hint of ferrous.
Palate: Dialled up intense flavours highlight the magnificent 21 vintage. Ripe blackberry and black cherry fruits woven on a bed of baking spices at its core. Balanced, luscious and generous on the palate. The intensity of the brambly fruits and spice overshadow any suggestion of some usual savoury characters. Tightly coiled acidity balanced out superbly with dark chocolate tannins.
