Old Vine Moppa Grenache 2019
Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Hand Picked | Basket Pressed
Old Vine Grenache is sourced from a 3-acre vineyard grown on the southern slope of Moppa Hill. The contoured single vineyard was planted by Carl Albert Kalleske and son Ian in 1962. It has an elevation of 350 metres above sea level. Planted in ancient sandy soil, the vine roots are anchored deep into the orange clay and quartz stone reef below. The Moppa sandy soils are rich in iron minerals.
The unique small bunches grown are handpicked and yields are always low. The berries when ripe are very black in colour, thick skinned and rich in flavour and tannin. The grapes were handpicked on the 13th of March, 76% de-stemmed and whole berries along with 24% whole bunch transferred into a 3 tonne open top fermenter. Wild yeast to approx. 3 Baume consumed and cultured Rhone yeast to finish. Fermentation and extended maceration were carried out over 14 days. The cap was hand plunged twice a day with an occasional rack & return. After time on skins, wine drained to barrel and hand-dug skins to basket press.
Show Tasting Notes
Appearance: Garnet red colour, red-crimson rim.
Aroma: Savoury elements dominate; cranberry, wild strawberry and sour cherry along with some primary raspberry fruits. Alluring spices of nutmeg, cloves and a green peppercorn character in this case most likely from the high use of stalks. Some herbal notes of sage are also present along with nuances of dark chocolate and savoury earthy undertones.
Palate: The ultra-low yielding, hot vintage adding interest to the palate. The primary fruits are juicy/crunchy cherry and raspberry flavours with the tartness of cranberry to finish. It’s soft with a creamy texture through the mid palate and drying tannins on the finish.
