Moppa Block Shiraz 2014
Hand Picked | Basket Pressed | 96 pts by James Halliday
Moppa Block Shiraz is sourced from Block 4, a 4 acre single vineyard on the steep eastern slopes of Moppa Hill, located in the Barossa Valley. This vineyard has an altitude of almost 400m which makes it the highest vineyard on the western side of the Barossa, a somewhat cooler site in a warmer region. The soil is red/brown earth with iron stone fragments over friable red/orange clay. With crop levels generally low, the ’14 vintage produced a total of 10 barrels from the site with only the best 3 barrels making it to bottling.
The grapes were handpicked on the 13th of March. 100% de-stemmed and fully crushed berries into small three-tonne open top fermenters. Cold soak and fermentation was conducted over 14 days with the cap being hand plunged three times per day with an occasional rack and return. The wine is matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Show Tasting Notes
Appearance: Impenetrable black almost to the rim with just a touch of crimson red to separate the core.
Aroma: Expressive ripe dark fruits of black cherry, mulberry and dark plum take centre stage and in the first row mixed spices, aniseed and black pepper. There is a presence of earthy tones and dried herbs.
Palate: An explosion of black fruits lead into an overall concentrated and velvety palate. This seductive side has an element of drinkability now but time in the cellar will reward. There is a mineral texture running through with good acidity and a powerful finish of pronounced grainy tannins.
