Greenock Shiraz 2012
Estate Grown | Hand Picked | Basket Pressed
The 2012 Greenock Shiraz was sourced from two family vineyards grown on the Kalleske’s Greenock property, affectionately known as East Block and Hill Block. This working farm has been owned by our Winemaker Shawn Kalleske’s family since 1855.
Only the finest fruit from the 2 blocks was hand selected for the Greenock Shiraz. The grapes were handpicked, de-stemmed and 100% crushed, the crushed berries are then placed into small open top fermenters. Fermentation and maturation on skins are conducted over 14 to 21 days with the cap being hand plunged twice per day with a rack and return. After fermentation the wine (free run) is drained to barrel and the skins are basket pressed.
Show Tasting Notes
Appearance: Shimmering black in colour, impenetrable black core with rich red rim.
Aroma: A brooding mix of Christmas cake, dark plum and dark cherry wrapped by cedar and spices; nutmeg, pepper, cloves and touch of vanilla. There is a hint of perfume and violets typical of Greenock fruit that shows after opening but the overall characters of Christmas cake, dark fruits and spices prevail.
Palate: Lusciously rich, silky front to mid palate with an almost chewy texture once the wine has had time to open up. The mouthfeel is concentrated with a dark fruit dominance and it shows its complexity with bitter dark chocolate, spices, quality oak, structured acidity and plenty of ripe fine grained tannins. The back palate is firm but balanced with the tannins and acidity and lingers with a spicy finish.
