2022 Block 6 Shiraz

Estate Grown | Single Vineyard | Basket Pressed

The 2022 Moppa Hill, Block 6 Shiraz is sourced from a 6-acre single vineyard on the eastern slope of the Moppa Hill.  It has an altitude of 355m to 370m and is planted on ancient iron rich sandy soil over friable orange clay.  Sustainable vineyard practices are used with a real care for the soil and surrounding natural environment.  Naturally a low yielding vineyard and produces wine with distinctive aromas and complexity.

The fruit was picked over 2 stages, first on April 1 and second 9th of April and yielded another small vintage at 1.4 tons per acre.  The first harvest, pumped over twice per day for 24 days on skins. The second harvest, 90% de-stemmed with 10% whole bunch. Traditional fermentation practices with hand plunging twice per day and receiving an occasional rack and return over 23 days on skins.  After desired time on skins the wine was drained to barrel, the skins hand-dug to the basket press.  And matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Appearance:  Dark magenta core with a crimson-purple rim.

Aroma:  Vibrant and alluring where the depth of aromas is abundant. Mulberry, blueberry, raspberry and abundant spice, are characterized on this cooler vintage.  This site assures a true sense of place with its purity of fruits, mixed spices including star anise and green peppercorns.  There is a subtle suggestion of geological input from the site adding complexity with a hint of ferrous.

Palate:  Purity and seamlessness define the cooler 2022 vintage. A core of mulberry, plum and black cherry fruit is layered with subtle baking spice, adding depth and warmth. A delicate herbal thread — perhaps sage and bay leaf — weaves through both nose and palate, enhancing complexity without dominance. Overall, the wine is beautifully balanced, luscious and silky in texture. Tightly coiled acidity is finely matched by fine-grained tannins, providing structure and poise to the long, elegant finish.
