Vintage 2021 at a glance.
Thursday 4th February kicked off vintage at Laughing Jack for 2021. The first pick of the season was our old vine Semillon from the family estate in Greenock. 3 weeks later followed the 1.5 acres of bush vine Grenache in front of cellar door aka our Rosé block.
The first Shiraz block for our table wines was picked on the 23rd of February with the last on the 19th March. Shiraz from Mum’s block in Greenock for our Tawny Port is yet to be picked and last but not least Moppa Mataro in early April.
2021 has certainly been an impressive vintage with flavour evident early, it was just a matter of waiting for tannin and acid balance. No threat of excessive heat or rain. An uninterrupted vintage with mild conditions. The winery came to full capacity very quickly, a sense of excitement could be felt as the quality of the fruit coming in was most impressive.
We’ve been delighted to see quality exceptionally high with yields better than the previous two years. Coming off of being 70% down in 2019 and still 65% down in 2020, we’re more than happy with only 25% down this year.
