Moppa Block Shiraz 2013

Hand Picked | Basket Pressed | 95 pts by James Halliday

Moppa Block Shiraz is sourced from Block 4, a 4 acre single vineyard on the eastern slopes of Moppa Hill, located in the Barossa Valley.  This vineyard has an altitude of almost 400m which makes it the highest vineyard on the western side of the Barossa, a somewhat cooler site in a warmer region.  The soil is red-brown earth with ironstone fragments over friable red-orange clay.   Just 4 barrels were produced from this site in 2013 with crop levels at record lows.

The grapes were handpicked on the 7th of March, 100% de-stemmed and 100% berries fully crushed into a small three-tonne open top fermenter.  Fermentation was conducted over 14 days with the cap being hand plunged three times per day with an occasional rack and return.  The wine is matured with minimal racking until being bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Show Tasting Notes

Appearance:  Dark crimson to brick red with an impenetrable black core.

Aroma:  Sweet sour cherries, the heady vanilla bean and finely shaved dark chocolate.

Palate:  Cherry kirsch follows on the palate; deep, rich mocha and vanilla. There’s no suggestion of pruniness or overripe fruit. Rather, a freshness and linearity achieved through a coil of acidity. Tannins are soft; quality oak effectively frames the fruit and adds to the wine’s sophistication.
